Back to Braamfontein...

I have heard of a "car boot" sale, but this Beetle seems to be an entire shop.I pondered whether all the stock actually fitted inside the vehicle when it was time to pack up

The lower part of Braamfontein is slowly being renovated as this bight green building in a sea of bland concrete proves.

This mirrored scooter drew a lot of admiring looks.

The entrance to the weekend food market...
surely this does not apply to foot traffic?

I somehow believe that the drinkers of this particular beverage do not really care about where they drinks rather how much is consumed.

The market was extremely busy...

I did not know...it there dishonest chocolate?

This particular stall was doing great business...

Pot plants hanging on the wall for decoration.I wonder how they get watered?

After a quick visit to the packed food market I wandered across de Beer Street to the Milner Park Hotel, one of the oldest surviving building in Braamfontein.

This particular establishment could be anywhere is small town SA

They serve a variety of burgers
Looks great and taste REAL good...like a good burger should!
The only way to eat a burger...forget the pretentious knife and fork and just get stuck in.

A group of regulars in Kitchener's Carvery Bar(officially the second oldest pub in Johannesburg) waiting for Godot...

Co-owner,Chester, manning the bar.

Pressed steel ceilings, bare brickwork and a stunning lamp...

Bare brick adds character, and cuts down on repainting.

The ceiling in the main bar area...

This is what the locals want...good old fashioned beer, not a fancy designer label in sight

A couple of the "regulars"...

This chap left but returned...

Time for the entertainment...

Piano man... certainly not!

'Twas the multi-talented Citizen Jones...

Richard, who many years ago was a presenter on Capital Radio, plays a variety of old standards...but not that old!

From Dylan to Cat Stevens he covers most of the contemporary folk/rock/country classics. Richard chortles 'choones' every Saturday afternoon starting at about 1pm. Don't be a wallpaper tourist, stop in and listen.

Co-owner Lee pondering on what song to request from Citizen Jones...

It certainly was the most peaceful pub I have visited in a long while.
The hotel can be found on the corner of  Juta and de Beer Streets in Braamfontein.
